About Us

Minga is a youth-run 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to ending the child sex trade around the world. We seek to educate and empower youth and adults in our local, national, and international communities. Our name, “minga,” comes from the Quechua language of Ecuador and means “the coming together of a community to work for the betterment of all.” With your help, we can end this cycle of exploitation.

Our headquarters are located in Newton, Massachusetts.

How Minga Started

In July 2006, Katie Simon participated in a volunteer and leadership trip on the US-Mexico border. She learned about many issues facing the world, but none particularly resonated with her until one evening when the group watched a movie about child labor. One scene showed recently rescued girls crying on the floor as part of a primal therapy session. Katie knew she had to do something.

Another participant on the trip told Katie about an initiative he and his friends had started. They had already gotten Air Canada to show a video warning against exploiting minors abroad on all outbound international flights, with a monthly viewing of over 350,000 people. Now they were fundraising hundreds of thousands of dollars to build and support another rehabilitation center for dozens of child prostitutes in the Philippines. Katie kept asking questions.
